The City of Clearwater Shows Strong Growth as International Tourist Destination

The tourism industry has shown significant growth in Clearwater, Florida based on recently published reports. Clearwater and its Island Beaches have long been attracting visitors from far and wide, but the destination has shown particularly strong growth this year. Virtually all markers point to increased visitor numbers across the board and the outlook is especially bright with the anticipated release of Dolphin Tale this fall.
The figures released by the Pinellas County CVB for May reports growth in tourist numbers, total room nights and overall visitor expenditure. Total visitors to the area for May of this year reached 378,300 people, up 4.2% from 2010, while the year-to-date statistics show similar growth, up 2.4% to 2,373,400 people. Total room nights climbed to 535,100, representing an increase of 5.4% compared to last year. Occupancy rates are up across the board as is total expenditure in the area. The year-to-date expenditure from tourism is $3,015,800, so far for 2011, up 3.8% from 2010.
Visitor satisfaction has also increased, with over 95% of those surveyed responding positively, as has those visitors who plan to return, currently greater than 90%. More than 94% of respondents said that they would recommend visiting the area to a friend.
The City of Clearwater is a year round beach destination on Florida’s acclaimed Gulf coast and is consistently hailed as one of the top beaches in the US.
