Clearwater’s Dolphin Pod Welcomes the Republican National Convention
July 25, 2012
The City of Clearwater is creating a special welcome for the nearly 50,000 attendees and guests of the Republican National Convention in August with a collection of 50 individually designed dolphin statues. The project, named Clearwater's Dolphins, was designed to artistically showcase the bottlenose dolphin, a true icon of the Tampa Bay and Clearwater area. The pod of 50 six-foot-tall, fiberglass dolphins recently arrived in the city, and local artists are currently busy transforming them into individual works of art to be displayed and enjoyed in Pier 60 Park. Traveling all the way from the Icon Poly Studio in Gibbon, Nebraska, the dolphins are meant to highlight and celebrate Clearwater’s beautiful beaches and significant marine life.
Each dolphin statue has been sponsored by a local or national organization, and local artists have been invited to submit their designs and ideas. The fiberglass dolphins provide an 80 pound blank canvas to be uniquely designed and created at the artists’ discretion. In particular, one very important dolphin, sponsored by the City of Clearwater, sports a Triathlon inspired design in a patriotic display, especially timely with this year’s upcoming Summer Olympics. The dolphin displays three different symbols representing the sport in a festive red, white and blue color scheme. Clearwater’s Dolphins has been specifically created to welcome RNC visitors and encourage them to enjoy all that Clearwater has to offer.
Home of Winter, star of the hit movie Dolphin Tale, Clearwater is historically supportive of local marine life and a natural home for the dolphin pod. The exhibit will be on display at Pier 60 Park, Clearwater Beach from August 6 through September 4, 2012. The public art exhibit will be visible 24 hours per day during this period, and be lit by solar powered LED lights at night. The Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce is spearheading this artistic showcase with support from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the City of Clearwater.
