Original Hooters to Host World Wing-Eating Championship
July 23, 2013
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut returns to Clearwater, Fla. next week to defend his championship title in the second annual Hooters World Wing-Eating Championship, Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m.
Hooters fans are encouraged to come out and join the "nearly world famous" Hooters Girls to cheer on competitors at the Original Hooters, 2800 Gulf to Bay Blvd. The party starts at 6 p.m. with live music by The Black Honkeys.
Held in partnership with Major League Eating (MLE), the event kicks off the Original Hooters' and the brand's 30th anniversary, and is the grand finale of the five-city Hooters World Wing-Eating Tour that kicked off in March in Panama City, Fla.
Chestnut will be up against two female competitive eating sensations: Miki Sudo and Michelle Lesco, both of whom bested him in a rib-eating contest in Chicago earlier this year.
The crowning of the Wing-Eating World Champion begins a weekend-long celebration leading up to National Chicken Wing Day on Monday, July 29. That's the day Hooters locations nationwide will offer an all-you-can-eat chicken wing deal to challenge wing-eating enthusiasts across the country to collectively consume one million chicken wings in a day.
"It's exciting to host the 'world' championship event at the Original Hooters," said Neil Kiefer, president and CEO of Hooters Management Corp.; "seems only fitting that it be held right here where it all began".
“Hooters is home to the world’s most delicious chicken wings,” said George Shea, Chairman of Major League Eating. “While each contest will feature Major League Eaters, this tour will once again help us find hidden wing-eating talent. We are searching for a yet-to-be-discovered champion athlete, a born eater with an intuitive understanding of the wing who can test Chestnut’s dominance in the sport.”
