Iconic Phillie Phanatic Received Key to the City of Clearwater, Fla

March 05, 2012

In honor of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team’s return to Clearwater, Fla. for spring training, Mayor George N. Cretekos presented the key to the City of Clearwater to Philadelphia’s favorite green mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. The Phillies have called this scenic beach town their second home since 1947, and the city is proud to welcome them back for the 66th year.

Thousands of fans converged at Bright House Field to cheer on their favorite team in their spring training opener against the Yankees on March 3. The City of Clearwater will bleed red for the entire month of March and local businesses are happy to welcome the baseball crowd. This year however, the Phillie Phanatic joined the celebration and took a fun-filled tour of Clearwater.

"The Phillie Phanatic has been exciting Phillies fans throughout the country for years. We in Clearwater are pleased to welcome him back and to help him relax and train before the start of another successful Phillies season," said Clearwater Mayor, George N. Cretekos.

During his stay, the Phanatic visited favorite local dining spots such as Frenchy’s Rockaway and Lenny’s Restaurant. He set sail on Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise and rode the Clearwater Jolley Trolley down the city’s picturesque Beach Walk to Captain Bligh’s Landing Miniature Golf. Gulf Coast sunsets are like no other, and the Phillie Phanatic enjoyed his view from the Palm Pavilion Beach Side Bar and Grill.

While in Clearwater, the Phillie Phanatic also appreciated walks on the area’s white sandy beaches, time in playgrounds, and a fun Segway journey down Beach Walk provided by Segway Adventure. Winter, Clearwater’s favorite resident dolphin, anxiously awaited the Phanatic’s arrival to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Here, he interacted with turtles, otters, sharks and much more.

Bright House Field has played host to game-time excitement since its completion in 2004 and features 7,300 fixed seats and a spacious grass berm capable of accommodating an additional 1,500 people. The field is also home to a tiki hut pavilion, group picnic areas, party suites, club seats, a children’s play area, and an expansive team store carrying unique merchandise.
