The
Clearwater Marina is home to the largest fishing fleet
on the West Coast of Florida with both party and charter
boats available. Across the street, Clearwater Beach's
Pier
60, open 24 hours a day (except Christmas), offers
a full service bait house with gear rental and sales,
live bait, snacks and beverages.
More than 300 varieties of fish swim in the Gulf of Mexico
and Tampa Bay, only a few of which are grouper, snapper,
trout, snook, tarpon, red fish, king-fish, shark, sailfish
and mackerel. However, a pier and a sandy shore offer
up both inshore and offshore marine life. Mangroves, sea
grasses, reefs and even piers themselves are habitats
for many fish.
A Florida
fishing license is required by residents 16 - 64 years
of age and visitors 6 years or older. There are two licenses,
freshwater and saltwater, depending upon what type of
fish is to be caught. Licenses may be purchased at Pier
60, the tax collector's office (Pinellas County Court
House, 315 Court Street, Clearwater (727) 464-3375), bait
and tackle shops and sports retailers (for example, Wal-Mart,
K-Mart). Instant licenses are also available via the internet
or a toll free call (888) 347-4356 for those using a credit
card. Licensing is normally included when fishing from
party and charter boats and many piers.
Fishermen can fish throughout the year in our fertile
waters as Florida has a year-round season. Whether fishing
is an occasional pastime or a reason to travel, Clearwater
must be considered.
