The City of Clearwater, Fla. Sees Significant Growth in Tourism and Increase in Hotel Rooms to Meet
December 23, 2015
The City of Clearwater, Fla. has seen significant growth in tourism throughout the years, with a record number of travelers visiting the city this year. To keep up with the demand, the city has plans for an increase of at least 1,200 hotel rooms. The number of tourists to visit Clearwater has steadily increased over recent years with 626,500 visitors in the Fall 2014/Winter 2015 season as compared to 581,100 visitors in the Fall 2013/Winter 2014 season. This 7.8 percent growth has been reflected in the number of hotel rooms booked and the overall economic impact. The increase in the number of tourists to visit Clearwater has been in large part due to the growth of singles and couples traveling without children to the destination. The overwhelming majority of tourists visiting Clearwater in 2015 traveled from the Midwest and Northeast.
In anticipation of continued growth in tourism, hotel properties slated to open in Clearwater in the coming year includes Opal Sands Resort and the Wyndham Grand Resort. Opal Sands Resort is set to open in February 2016, with each of its 230 rooms having waterfront views with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Enviably located on Clearwater's promenade, the luxury resort will capture the essence of a beach-chic vibe with contemporary design, waterfront zero entry pool, spa, Italian seafood restaurant, beachside tiki bar and 25,000 square feet of meeting space. In early 2017, the high-end beachfront Wyndham Grand Resort Clearwater Beach will open its doors to guests as one of the largest hotels in the area and the most expansive structure ever built on Clearwater Beach, with 450 rooms split between two towers.
Hotels already established in the destination will also be upgrading and refurbishing their spaces, as the demand for excellence spreads. Upgrades on already existing properties include the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa’s complete overhaul of guest rooms and room renovations at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort and the Hilton Clearwater Beach. Additionally, earlier this year Shephard’s Beach Resort finished a complete revamp, which includes the addition of their new interactive dining experience, Ocean Flame, and tequila bar, Salt.
